Object of the Scholarship
The object of the scholarship is to assist students or scholars undertaking study or research that will serve to benefit Indigenous (Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander) children in Australia. The words 'to benefit Indigenous children' are to be interpreted broadly, encompassing undergraduate and postgraduate study, pure and applied research, and including such subject areas as Indigenous health, education, housing, community planning and design, and quality of lifestyle.
The institution participating in the scheme governed by these rules is the University of Queensland, and the scheme is administered through its School of Architecture and the Aboriginal Environments Research Centre.
The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Senate on the recommendation of a committee appointed by the Senate and comprising:-
(a) a representative of the Ceridwen Trust;
(b) the Director of the Aboriginal Environments Research Centre; and
(c) the Head of the Department of Architecture.
The selection committee may recommend to the Senate the number of award recipient/s to be made in any year (or whether there will be no award in a particular year) and, in making its recommendation, shall take into account:
(a) The academic merit or technical excellence of the applicant and their work; and
(b) the meritous performance, actual contribution or likely contribution which the applicant has made or will make, either directly or indirectly to the benefit of Indigenous children in Australia.
Size of Scholarship
The size and number of scholarships may vary from year to year. In 2008 it is envisaged that a single scholarship will be awarded of size approximately $2,500.
Eligibility to apply
The scholarship is open to:
(a) undergraduate students who have successfully completed at least two years of an undergraduate course, and
(b) postgraduate students,
in the School of Architecture, University of Queensland and who are pursuing study or research in relation to Indigenous Australia.
Content of Application
The applicant is required to describe (in writing) how their study or research will fulfill the object of the scholarship (as described above).
The applicant is asked to outline in his or her application how the scholarship will be used to further their study or their research during the duration of their University course.
Submission of Application
Applications must be submitted to the Director, Aboriginal Environments Research Centre, School of Architecture, Zelman Cowen Building by 5pm on Monday 12th October 2009.
Notification of success or non-success of applicant
Applicants will be notified of their success or non-success in writing by the School of Architecture. The successful applicant will be announced at the Summer Exhibition in the School of Architecture held in late November and will have their prize awarded there (usually starts at about 6.30pm).
